The up-gradation of Northern East West Highway (NEWH) works started towards the end of 2014. The up-gradation project was launched by His Excellency Shir Pranab Mukherjee, the President of India on 8th November 2014 in Convention Centre, Thimphu. The total length of the project is 385km. The first stretch of the highway from Semtokha to Wangduezam was successfully inaugurated by His Excellency Lyonpo Damchoe Dorji, Minister for Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 28th June 2017. The inaugural function was attended by the first secretary, Indian Embassy, Government Ministers, Secretaries, Hon’ble Members of Parliament, representatives from local governments and other dignitaries. After the inauguration ceremony at Semtokha, the guests travelled to Dochula and to Wangduezam to experience the joy of riding on a much improved and double laned section of the NEWH.
