Design Division

This division is mandated to
a. Prepare annual work plan;
b. Coordinate feasibility studies for new road alignment and bridges;
c. Coordinate detailed survey and design for new road and bridges;
d. Review and approve design and drawings;
e. Review works carried out by the consultants/engineers with regard to road and bridge designs;
f. Train and guide new engineers and other field engineers in the design of road and bridge;
g. Initiate design and built contract modality;
h. Survey and design of river training works for bridges and road embankment;
i. Provide technical support to Regional Offices and other agencies;
j. Liaise with the relevant agencies of RGoB like the Department of Geology and Mines in carrying out the feasibility studies for tunneling;
k. Issue administrative approval and financial sanction;
l. Road Safety Auditing and Monitoring;

This division have following sections with set of mandates
1.Road Design Section
a. Carryout feasibility studies by way of desktop studies using maps, aerial photographs, etc and ground reconnaissance surveys;
b. Carryout detailed topographical survey of road alignments;
c. Prepare road geometric designs and drawings for different road categories;
d. Impart survey training to the Regional/field surveyors on the latest surveying methods;
e. Carryout data collection necessary for road pavement designs;
f. Carryout design verification and incorporate changes wherever required;
g. Prepare cost estimates and bill of quantities;
h. Carryout road pavement design.

2.Bridge Design Section
a. Carryout bridge site selection, survey and conceptual design for bridges;
b. Prepare standard bridge designs;
c. Carryout detailed bridge design and drawings;
d. Prepare cost estimates and bill of quantities;
e. Prepare technical specifications;
f. Support bridge construction and maintenance sections;

3.Geotechnical Section
a. Carryout sub-soil investigation for roads and bridges;
b. Assist and complement in the feasibility studies for roads and bridges;
c. Carryout detailed studies on unstable sections of roads and highways;
d. Carryout prefeasibility studies for road tunnels;
e. Carryout field and laboratory tests.
