Bajo – Khuruthang Highway Upgraded

People of Wangdue Phodrang and Punakha will now enjoy a comfortable and enjoyable drive between Bajo and Khuruthang. The improvement of Bajo-Khuru Road has been recently completed and upgraded to a Secondary National Highway (SNH).  It was funded under Project Tied Assistance of Government of India.

The Upgradation of 8.6 km of Bajo-Khuru Road was divided into two packages- Package-I & II which commenced in April 2020.  The scope of works included widening to 8.5 meters from 5 meters; strengthening and improving the pavement thickness, improvement of water management through surface, subsurface and cross drainages; slope stabilization by providing adequate  retaining and breast walls; improving road safety through  installation of crash barriers and road markings along the entire length of the road ensuring safety of the commuters.

The project was completed at a cost of Nu. 125 million.

The project was taken up considering the proximity of the road near historic Punakha Dzong, the venue of many national events periodically. In addition, the traffic intensity on this stretch of road has increased many folds over the years, causing inconvenience to the commuters and making it prone to accidents. Now the much widened and scenic road conveniently connects the two population centers of Khuruthang and Bajo.

The upgradation of this road will not only shorten initial travel time of 30-40 mins between Khuruthang and Bajo to 10-15 mins but also reduce incidences of accidents and vehicle maintenance cost whereby enhancing socio-economic well-being of the people of Wangduephodrang and Punakha. This also fulfills the Department’s objective of gradually enhancing the load carrying capacity of all our highways.
