Improvement of Sunkosh-Dagapela Road

The existing Sunkosh-Dagapela road passes through settlements of Tshangkha, Drujeygang & Trashiding gewogs under Dagana Dzongkhag. Although the road was classified as a Secondary National highway, the road was too narrow for heavy vehicles plying through it and did not meet the specifications of the Secondary National highway. The average blacktopped road width was around 3.50 m. Therefore, the improvement of the road had become critical to cater to all types of vehicular traffic and for the socio-economic development Dagana Dzongkhag.

The improvement of 45.5 km road stretch was funded under Project Tied Assistance of Government of India. Entire work has been divided in three packages which commenced on May 2020.

The scope of the work included widening of critical stretches, strengthening and improving the pavement, improvement of water management through surface and cross drainages; improving road safety through road markings along the entire length of the road ensuring safety of the commuters.

The project was completed at a cost of Nu. 115 million.

The improvement of Sunkoah-Dagapela road not only reduces travel time and vehicle operating cost but also facilitates smooth and safe movement of vehicular traffic which in turn reduces risk for the commuters. Moreover, the changes brought about by the improvement of this road are found to be mostly positive pertaining to increased investment opportunities and greater markets. With the road stretches improved, businesses are going to have access to a wider market which would lead to better economies of scale in production, distribution and consumption.
